OpenSuSE 10.3

Nyt kun ollaan päästy tuon 10.2 makuun niin osaako joku kertoa onko jo jossain olemassa listaa suunnitelluista uudistuksista OpenSuSE 10.3:ssa.

Koitin etsiä OpenSuSEn nettisivuilta ja googlettaa vähän, mutta ei oikein löytynyt mitään.

Qt 4.2.* (jonka saa jo KDE:Backports:sta)

ja muistakin ohjelmista uudet versiot. Nuo "upeat ominaisuudet" ilmoitetaan varmaan myöhemmin. Nämä on kuultuja huhuja Internetin eri lähteistä.

Muutama viikko sen jälkeen kun se julkaistaan "vakaaksi". Julkaisu näillä näkymin tapahtuu keväällä 2007.

Uusimman Linux Format lehdessä oli artikeli KDE4:sta ja ohjeet niille jotka haluavat sen asentaa. Lehdessä kerrottiin kuinka se asennetaan KDE3:n rinnalle, mutta itse meinaan leikkiä VMWaren kanssa tolla kaiken varalta. Mikäli Englanti taipuu ja aihe kiinnostaa niin suosittelen kyllä lehden ostamista.

Nyt tän kuun puolivälissä on kaiketi tulossa eka alpha-versio ja seuraavat siitä sitt kuukauden välein.
Valmista on 'ennustettu' tulevan syyskuussa ...vuonna 2007 ;-)

Saattaa olla, että esim tuo KDE 4 antaa odotuttaa uusia distro-versioita...

Onko tuolla nyt niin kiire . Ehkä parempi onkin että tehdään se versio "valmiiksi", ettei käy kuten 10.1 kanssa. Itse käyttäisin varmaan vieläkin 10.0 ellei olisi tuota levyrikkoa tullut. Sai ainakin syyn asentaa uusin.

I'm glad to announce the first public alpha release of openSUSE 10.3.

Since the openSUSE 10.2 final release, the most significant changes
are:

* GNOME is moved to /usr.  Please do test especially updates from
  older distributions.

* KDE updated to KDE 3.5.6.

* Linux Kernel updated to 2.6.20.  There's no Xen support enabled for
  now.

* Pattern for minimal text install (see the opensuse-factory thread
  for details)

* Update of OpenOffice.org to version 2.1.3.

* The whole distribution is build now with -fstack-protector to better
  guard against some buffer overflows.

* Usage of LUKS by default for crypto partitions in YaST.  Both GNOME
  and KDE handle removable LUKS media now.

Besides this a lot of bugs have been fixed and various packages
updated.

openSUSE 10.3 Alpha1 is an important milestone for us since it is an
installable release so that everybody doing development in the last
weeks can double check that their changes not only work in their own
environment but also in the complete distribution.  It also shows us
the state of STABLE so that everybody should be able to use STABLE as
basis for their work.

Most annoying bugs for now:

 * Adding a remote repository shows "/media.1/in not found". Just
   press OK to continue the install Bug 243498

 * ftp installation of mounted CD/DVD images is not possible (http
   seems to work - and installation from online repositories works as
   well) Bug 245304

 * On x86-64, you need CD4 for a default install since some extra
   -devel packages are installed Bug 245332

 * Some Systems will hang at "Cloning the system ..." when selecting
   "Clone This System for AutoYaST" Bug 245350

 * Registration does not work Bug #240591

 * A GNOME installation does not include OpenOffice_org and banshee
   Bugs 245408 245407

openSUSE 10.3 Alpha1 comes as different medias:
* 5 CDs, you need CDs 1-3 for a normal installation with just GNOME or
  KDE (any language)
* 1 AddOn CD with only NonOSS packages on it
* 1 AddOn CD with language packages that are used for extra
  languages (the 5 CDs contain support for english, french, italian, spanish,
  german, chinese, japanese, czech, danish, norwegian, khmer,
  hungarian, polish) (the 5 CDs have support for installation in all
  languages, just extra packages are only on this extra media)
* 1 DVD containing the contents of the 5 CDs and the NonOSS AddOn CD
* CDs/DVDs containing the sources corresponding to the media

We have created Delta ISOs from the final version of openSUSE 10.2
Please use them for download. 

The DVDs and the source media are only available via bittorrent.

lista se tuokin, vaikka lie melkoisen 'varovainen' ellei peräti vanhentunut jo syntyessään...
eiköhän hiukka uudempi kernelikin lie ehtii föliin, mutt ennen kaikkea myös KDE4 tulee mukana vaihtoehtoisena kälinä - tosin ns ennakkoversiona (beta tai mahd peräti rc:nä) 3.5.6 tai 3.5.7:n rinnalle

* On x86-64: Firefox is now a 64-bit package and uses nspluginwrapper
  to handle 32-bit i386 plugins if needed.

* AppArmor uses now a new parser.  The kernel patches have been
  reworked completely.  Please do test AppArmor extensively (see below).

* GNOME 2.18 mostly integrated.

* Update to Kernel 2.6.21 RC5

* New opensuse-updater running natively under GNOME

* Further fixes for using libata by default for IDE devices

* New yast2-ftp-server module.

* The package manager handles more than one CD/DVD drive.

Gnome ja sen ohjelmat muuttivat /usr-hakemiston alle. Pitänee kokeilla myös tuota opensuse-updater-gnome -appletia joku päivä.

Mutta Gnome ei toimi lähes ollenkaan. SVG:t ei ole tuettuja (?), vte ei tue real-transparencya Gnome-terminalissa (mm. Beryliä käytettäessä) ja uusi gconf sotkee vanhat asetukset. Uusi, päivitetty gnome-main-menu lagii välillä pahasti ja saattaa hävitä paneelista kokonaan. En voi suositella Gnomea käytettäväksi vielä. Sitten muita bugeja:

* Java applications are not working due to implementation errors in
  SUN Java. Bug 252510 Workaround here and also adding

  "LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=1" to the environment.

* The installation of vim-normal might fail, just ignore it Bug 262706

* Branding and translations are still at the 10.2 level Bug 240598

* The Radeon driver is broken and crashes the X server Bug

  263199. Workaround: Disable the MergedFB option (see bugreport).

* Installation with several CD-ROMs might crash at some point Bug 263207

* gnome-main-menu might crash in some installations. bug
  263294. Fix: Reinstall gnome-main-menu with –force (you might
  want to install a new control-center2 package without the
  duplicated libslab, it’s available from the ftp server under
  10.3-Alpha3/Extra-RPMs).

aikatauluhan on ihan hyvä, mutt hiukka aikainen KDE 4.0:n julkaisuaikataulua ajatellen... joku beta vasta sillon ulkona, tuskin edes rc:tä...

Voi kun voisivat hiukka odotella
tai tekisivät vaihtoehtona aktiivisesti niitä KDE-päivityksiä 4:lle
